WRITETALK: Participation Policy Or Comment Conduct or [insert alliterative phrase of your own choice [Dec. 13th, 2007|01:19 pm]
[Tags|, ]

“Writetalk” is a series of posts in which I post new, rewritten chapters of AST and point out my reasoning behind what I’ve changed, and ask for input and criticism. Beta by consensus? Writing in public? Actually, writing in public kinda sorta almost fits. If you just want to read the story, do that. If you just want the meta, do that. Both is cool; neither is cool.

What I would love to get: )
Why I would love to get it: )
What you should know straight up: )

Last Word:

This is an experiment, and my responses and posts and most of the comments you’ll read (crosses fingers and hopes there WILL be comments) will likely reflect that. Feel free to comment and tell me if I have put the word “hammer” in this post where it Should Not Be, or if I really want to clarify some point, or if there is a ready-made comm I can actually positutely do this in fo’ realz ALREADY. I’m likely going to go continue looking for one as soon as I post this, but I’m not holding my breath.

If you would much rather talk in private but feel odd about emailing or IMing me, go hither to this screened comment entry and put forth thine comments, and lo, we shall converse in great privity and, erm. I think I used a couple of those wrong :-/

WRITETALK: Writing Manifesto [Dec. 13th, 2007|12:31 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Why this is here: To let people know what my reasons for writing are, and to give a very very general idea of how I write as quickly as possible. [NOTE: This is short right now, and though it might grow a bit, it will always aim to be short, so as not to waste your time ;)]

I write for myself first, and my readers first and a half. Er, it works out, I promise. I am a rabid, mostly unapologetic review whore; luckily for you, I also like to gab critically about my fic, and am in this business to improve my writing as well as share it with others.

I write what I love to read. Fave authors include Lois Bujold first and a bunch of other fabulous authors second, Scott Westerfeld, Robin McKinley, David Abraham, and so on. I hope to write something that lasts and is filling and satisfying to read; something that takes something out of you, that demands effort of you, but not so much that you can’t curl up and rest with the book in your hands. I don’t know if I’ll ever be there, but that is my goal.

I write all the time, because I love doing it. Or, I should say, I invent all the time. I am constantly peering at my characters, adjusting their makeup, poking at them, dropping them into all sorts of hypothetical situations, and all because it is great glorious fun. Actually shoving stuff onto a page is just as fun, only you actually have to work at it, and it is work as well as fun. Sometimes it is the easiest thing ever, and sometimes I feel like I’d rather shoot myself than look at a sentence again. But I keep doing it anyway, because I find it fun.

I write with other people’s characters. Because that, too, is fun. I’ve never gotten round to posting my (mostly incomplete) original fic because of several reasons, and I suppose one of them could accurately be called being lazy. But what’s the point of being hardworking when there’s already a story you want to write, a hard story with some stuff that you didn’t have to make up and some stuff you had to make up because the story wouldn’t make sense otherwise? I say there isn’t one. I also say I want to finish my hard, close-to-hand story first, and that if that ends up taking till I die, it is quite all right so long as I had gobs of fun along the way.

Which, because writing is fun, because writing with other people’s stuff is fun, is kind of a given. Forever and amen.

Introducing WRITETALK [Dec. 13th, 2007|11:48 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | anxious]

You may or may not already know that I've been feeling conflicted over whether or not to post my fic on journalling sites like IJ instead of on fic archives like FF.net. Now, confronted with the fact that my desire to rewrite a completed, novel-length fic of mine is still very present despite the fact that I can't (more like won't :P) post it on LJ in the one comm I felt comfy posting it in, I've basically decided to try posting it here and see how that works out.

Only, er. What's always bugged me about posting fics and receiving reviews is that there's usually a very small amount of crit given in. I understand the concerns that stop people posting crit and even reviewing to begin with, and I know that this may not help, but want to try it anyway, just cause it would be useful to me if it worked in the slightest ;). There was a comm on LJ (writeintheopen) that was set up for authors to use to talk about the process of writing, or, really, expose it. Like, post their notes, talk with other people about them, etc etc.

It was all very low pressure, and conveniently set up at about the time the Snarry Olympics were starting up so that people would have ready made working fic ideas to rant put up, but so far it still doesn't seem to have done very well. Apart from the dampening factor of LJ drama and so on, I just don't know if there's much of a demand for a community like that here, where there still aren't that many people. And furthermore, I *still* felt uncomfortable thinking of posting long rants about a long, mostly gen fic in there, especially in a comm that was (and still is) populated mostly with Snarry writers. I'd much rather just start out something similar on my journal and see where that gets me instead of starting another comm where I wouldn't necessarily feel welcome (or that wouldn't draw in much participation, for that matter).

So, then. What I am going to do is:

- post a new chapter of A Surreal Tale (which is my first step in rewriting it) whenever it is ready
- post a shortish bit of meta about that chapter containing a top-of-the-mind impression of how I feel about the chapter, a couple clips from the chapter that I really liked putting in, or really liked seeing in new context and why I did, and a rundown of what I still think needs work.
- ??
- PROFIT

XD I will also lay down the rules of what kind of crit is welcome and what is not, and maybe try to include talking points (*facepalm*)? I dunno. This is going to be useful for me because it provides a ready made way for me to navelgaze for posterity, and capture my impressions about a chapter during a rewrite that will likely seem very weird and distant in about two years time, when I (may or may not!) get the hankering to rewrite again. This is going to be useful for you if you've ever wanted to peek into my notes folder, but don't actually want to wade in. Because, seriously? If I put up just the CORE NOTES for AST on its own, I'd have enough material for a shortish post every day for the next year or so. It would become VERY BORING FOR BOTH OF US.

Tl;dr: going to post rewritten form of AST up along with corresponding, linked posts that go all meta about the rewrite. All AST posts will come up under the fic:ast tag, and all corresponding meta will come up under the writetalk:ast tag. All writetalky posts EVER will be under the writetalk:all tag.
